Remodeling is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home, and the contractor you choose shapes the whole experience. As a home remodeling contractor in Philadelphia since around 2005, with roots in New York renovation work going back to 1986, Home Exchange plans and builds projects that look right, work well and finish when we said they would.

We started out doing complete residential and commercial building renovations. That experience taught us that a successful remodel depends less on the demolition and more on the plan behind it.

Every good remodel starts with a plan

Before anyone picks up a hammer, we sit down with you to work out what you want and how to get there.

Our in-house drafting service uses professional design software to produce detailed plans and photo-realistic renderings of your new kitchen, bathroom or living space. You can see your ideas on screen, compare finishes and change the layout before work begins. That saves time and material costs, and it means fewer decisions made in a rush halfway through.

The plans also include specifications, material and equipment schedules prepared with local codes in mind, which helps the permit process go smoothly.

Home remodeling services we offer

Kitchen remodeling

From new cabinets and countertops to a complete layout change, we handle every part of a kitchen remodel, including tile, plumbing, lighting and appliances. We install solid wood cabinets, not fiberboard.

Bathroom remodeling

Whether you want to update an existing bathroom, create a master suite or add a guest bath, our bathroom remodeling work covers everything from layout to fixtures. Ceramic and stone tile, on floors and walls, is something we especially enjoy.

Basement finishing

An unfinished basement is often the easiest way to add living space. We frame, insulate, drywall and floor it to create a family room, office or gym. See our basement finishing page for details.

Whole-house and multi-room renovations

Bought an older home, or updating several rooms at once? We coordinate the flooring, walls, ceilings, trim and paint so the whole house comes together as one project instead of a string of separate jobs. Our flooring and carpentry crews work as part of the same team.

  • Opening up a closed-off kitchen to the dining or living room
  • Separating the shower from the tub in a main bathroom
  • Adding a guest bathroom for privacy and convenience
  • Turning a basement into a media room or home office
  • Updating floors, trim and lighting throughout the house

Our remodeling process

  1. Consultation and estimate. We visit your home, listen to your goals and give you an honest, accurate estimate.
  2. Design. We create plans and renderings and refine them with you.
  3. Selections and scheduling. You choose materials, and we set a timeline and order everything in the right sequence.
  4. Construction. Our crew knows the scope and every detail you chose. We keep the site tidy and keep you informed.
  5. Final walk-through. We go over the finished work together to make sure it meets our Done Right Promise.

What affects the cost of a remodel

  • Size and number of rooms involved
  • Structural or layout changes, such as moving walls or plumbing
  • Material and fixture choices
  • Age and condition of the home, as older homes may need updates behind the walls
  • Permits and inspections required by your municipality

FAQ

Remodeling questions, answered

Do you provide design help for remodeling projects?

Yes. Our in-house drafting service uses professional design software to create detailed plans and photo-realistic renderings of your kitchen, bathroom or other renovation. You can see your ideas and make changes before work begins, which saves time and material costs and keeps the project in line with local codes.

What is the difference between a handyman and a remodeling contractor?

A handyman typically handles smaller repairs and installations. A remodeling contractor plans and manages larger projects that involve several trades, such as layout changes, new kitchens or bathrooms and full renovations. Home Exchange does both, so you can call us for a quick repair or a complete remodel.

How do you keep a remodel on schedule and on budget?

It starts with a detailed plan. We set the scope, materials and timeline up front, order materials in the right sequence and coordinate each trade so work flows from one stage to the next. Our background in large building renovations taught us that good planning prevents most delays and surprise costs.

Do I need permits for my remodeling project?

Many remodeling projects need permits, especially those involving structural changes, plumbing or electrical work. Requirements differ between Philadelphia, the suburbs and New Jersey towns. Our plans include the specifications that permit offices ask for, and we will tell you what your project requires.

Which remodeling projects add the most value?

Kitchens and bathrooms are usually the rooms buyers care about most, and adding a bathroom or finishing a basement adds usable space. The right project depends on your home, your neighborhood and how long you plan to stay. We are happy to talk through options before you decide.
